Spider Monkeys Island

This area is dedicated to our Ateles belzebuth troop, 11 individuals —7 females and 4 males, aged between 3 and 10 years. These primates have been introduced to one another from 2017 to 2020 and have formed a cohesive group with a clear social structure. They’ve been kept under human care with minimal direct contact to ensure they adapt well to one another and are ready for the ne next step in their rehabilitation process.

OUR RELEASE PLAN FOR OUR SPIDER ATELES BELZEBUTH TROOP
We are currently building an island at RAREC to serve as a pre-release area for our spider monkeys. This controlled yet natural environment is crucial for preparing them for their return to the wild. It allows the primates to engage in natural behaviors like foraging, climbing, and forming social bonds within their troop, all while being protected from external threats. Surrounded by fruit trees and their preferred foliage, the island provides a space where they can gradually adapt to wild conditions, both physically and behaviorally, under our careful monitoring.

However, we recently encountered a significant setback. A powerful storm pushed a sandbank into the lake, unexpectedly reconnecting the island to the mainland. To complete this project, we must now remove the sand to isolate the island again and build a management area that will serve as a feeding and shelter space for the spider monkeys. This temporary delay will not stop us from continuing our work, and we are committed to overcoming this challenge.
