Thor, an endangered red howler monkey, arrived at our center in December 2019 when he was still very young. He was already highly imprinted on humans, leading us to believe that he had previously been kept as a pet. His owner seemed completely unaware of how to care for him, including providing an appropriate diet. When Thor became severely sick, he was abandoned at our front entrance.
Malnourished, dehydrated, and dangerously underweight, he appeared almost lifeless. Our dedicated veterinary team immediately took him in, and thanks to their care, he made a full recovery. However, Thor was the only red howler monkey at our center. Once he was strong enough to leave quarantine, we placed him in a separate enclosure near other primates. Over time, this helped him become more active, confident, and display natural behaviors.
After two years, we determined that the best option for Thor was to transfer him to another facility where two female red howler monkeys were already living, giving him the opportunity to socialize with his own kind. We hope he is thriving in his new home!
