Eva, a two-toed sloth, was orphaned when poachers killed her mother for meat. This practice is unfortunately very common in this region due to poverty. Instead of leaving Eva behind, they took her in to keep her as a pet. However, they fed her an unsuitable diet of bread and milk, which led to her becoming ill.
When Eva arrived, she was in poor condition, suffering from a swollen belly (timpanism). Our caretakers immediately started her on rehydration fluids and a specially formulated milk mixture. Thanks to their dedicated care, she recovered well. After her full rehabilitation, we released her back into the wild, where she belongs.
Eva, has continued to visit RAREC over the years and recently was spotted on property with a baby! Eva is the prime example of successful rehabilitation and release, helping spread genetic diversity and growing the next generation.
