Manatee

Rick and Bui

Bui

Bui is a female Amazonian manatee who arrived at RAREC in July 2018 when she was just six months old. She was discovered aboard a boat being trafficked alongside fish, a sad reminder of the threats these gentle creatures face. Fortunately, she was rescued and brought to RAREC, where she received the care and nourishment needed to grow and thrive. She was weaned in 2020 and has since been living in one of our pre-release lakes, where she has been gradually preparing for life in the wild.

Rick

Rick, a male Amazonian manatee, is the oldest of our manatees at RAREC. He arrived in August 2016 at approximately five years old and has been part of our rehabilitation program ever since. Now residing in a pre-release lake, Rick continues to adjust to a semi-wild environment, where he develops the survival skills necessary for potential release. After years of rehabilitation, Rick and Buis release is scheduled for next year.
