Rain, a juvenile Blue and Gold Macaw, and arrived at RAREC in August 2024 after being confiscated by authorities from the illegal wildlife trade. Unfortunately, Rain had suffered severe mistreatment before her rescue, arriving with two broken wings and a damaged right foot. Due to these injuries, she is unable to fly, but she has adapted well, using her good foot and beak to move around.
When Rain first arrived, she displayed rocking stereotypic behavior and was unusually quiet, signs of extreme stress. However, as she has grown more comfortable in her new environment, she has become more vocal and relaxed.
Maya was brought to RAREC in 2025 as an adult Macaw. A combo dropped her off and on initial exam she was found to have no long tail feathers. Without these vital feather, she was unable to fly properly. Yet, with time we hope she will regrow her feathers. Maya is very humanized as well and mimics human speech, a clear indicator she is unable to be released.

Rain and Maya were carefully introduced as a compatible pair and lived in the same enclosure, growing confidence from each other.
Due to the damage to their wings, Rain and Maya will not be able to return to the wild. In November 2025, they were both relocated together to a permanent facility to act as an ambassador of their species, helping to educate visitors about the threats faced by her species and the devastating impact of the illegal pet trade.
