Saki Monkey

Georgie and Gina

Georgie

Georgie, an equatorial saki monkey, arrived at RAREC on February 21, 2024, weighing just 390g and estimated to be around two months old. His story is a tragic but common one. He was taken from the Belén market after his mother was killed, then kept as a pet by a family for a month. Unfortunately, during this time, he was attacked by a dog and left unconscious. Unsure of how to care for him, the family surrendered him to RAREC.

Despite this rough start, Georgie made a remarkable recovery with no neurological damage. He is now thriving, gaining weight, and becoming more independent. However, he remains highly vocal around people, especially when they leave, a behavior the team is working on to reduce his dependency on humans.

As an equatorial saki, Georgie cannot be part of a release program with Luna or Gina, who are monk sakis. His future will depend on further assessments of his adaptability and rehabilitation progress.

Gina

Gina, a female monk saki, arrived on March 11, 2024, weighing 520g and estimated to be 3–4 months old. She was confiscated by the government after a woman found her abandoned on the street. Unlike Georgie, she is far less dependent on humans and shows promising signs of being a good candidate for rehabilitation.

For now, Gina and Georgie are being raised together, forming a close bond as they grow. However, since they are different species, they cannot remain together in the long term. Their future will be assessed based on their development and potential for release.
