Blue and Gold Macaw

Fred

Scientific name: Ara ararauna

Fred is a Blue and Gold Macaw and arrived at RAREC in August 2025 after being confiscated by local authorities. Fred was being kept as a pet and had both of his wings clipped by previous owners, making him unable to fly. His rehabilitation plan is to hope his wings grow back to allow him to fly again. However, Fred is habituated to humans to the point where he mimics human speech (says “Hola”).

Fred has made big milestones at RAREC and has grown back most of his wings and has started to show interest in flying during his enrichment walks and enjoys perching on branches with a vantage point.

However, due to the humanization, Fred is unable to be released. In November of 2025 he was successfully relocated to a permanent facility to be an ambassador of his species and have access to the best care and welfare. We are proud to be part of Fred’s short term care and can’t wait to hear about his progress!

This is a picture of Fred, and the Head Veterinarian, Dr. Stewart, the day he left for his new home. Dr. Stewart helped raise him when he got to RAREC, creating a special bond.

*Dr. Stewart is touching the top of this head as that is the only part appropriate to touch a bird in managed care. Macaws are NOT pets*
