Three Toed Sloth

Batata

Scientific Name: Bradypus

Batata, a juvenile three-toed sloth, was received in October 2025. She was discovered after being found on the side of a riverbed by locals after suspecting she lost her way. On her initial examination she was found to be severely dehydrated and lethargic. Our vet team collected blood, x-rays and placed an IV catheter to support hydration. She stayed at the center for a week regaining her strength and appetite. Our team would search for browse every day for her and make her recovery enclosure as enriching as possible.

She was named "Batata" or "Sweet Potato" for her docile temperament and small size, like a sweet potato.

In preparation for her release, our team searched the jungle for the tallest, most perfect Cecropia peltata tree after trekking for over an hour. On October 23rd she was successfully released back into the jungle late at night. We stayed with her until she reached over half way on the tree. We are proud to have been a part of her rehabilitation and rewilding!
