Herpetological Program

There are 9 countries that make up the Amazon rainforest. The Peruvian rainforest to home to 200 species of snakes of which 30 are endemic to only Peru. Peru is home to a large number of venomous snakes as well as snakes that have evolved to mimic these snakes in color.

Sadly over many many years the fear of snakes has grown. This fear is aided through misinformation, traditional folk tales, TV, Films and social media. This has caused a devastating affect on the population of many species around the world being pushed to extinction.

Sadly as a species we are the route cause of the problem as we are mindlessly destroying all of the unique environments that these snakes as well as thousands of other species call home. These animals have very slowly evolved and adapted to the environment to best survive over millions of years and yet in the blink of an eye we have destroyed it believing they will just go somewhere else.

We here at RAREC are working hard to re educate everyone we encounter from all walks of life, from people in the city out into the deep parts of the jungle. We want them to respect the snakes and to leave them alone. If they are a danger or a threat then to inform us to come and relocate it to a safe place away from people.

Come volunteer and help us to save so many beautiful species!
