OUR MISSION

RESEARCH

Beyond rescue efforts, RAREC serves as a research facility dedicated to the study and protection of Amazonian wildlife. We welcome interns in conservation and veterinary medicine, offering valuable hands-on experience for those passionate about wildlife protection and eager to contribute to meaningful research in the Amazon.

OUR EDUCATION PROGRAM

We also recognize the importance of education in conservation. Many local communities have little awareness of the ecological significance of these species or their protected status. That’s why we run programs aimed at educating and empowering the people of the Amazon, offering sustainable alternatives to poaching and incentives to participate in conservation efforts.

Our environmental education initiatives include classes in sustainable development and English for schoolchildren of all ages in local communities near the natural habitat of the species we are trying to protect. By fostering knowledge and awareness, we aim to inspire long-term change and protect the Amazon for future generations.

THE RESCUE CENTER

The world‘s biodiversity is under constant threat from illegal hunting, poaching, and deforestation. In the Peruvian Amazon, many species are currently in jeopardy, and along with them, the existence of the ecosystems they support.
This urgent need for conservation led to the creation of the Rainforest Awareness Rescue and Education Center (RAREC), located near Iquitos in the the Amazon Rainforest in Peru.
As a fully licensed rescue center, we work closely with the Peruvian Environmental Police to rehabilitate and release wildlife back into their natural habitat. Since our founding in 2011, we have rescued a diverse range of species, including manatees, ocelots, tapirs, anteaters, sloths, a giant river otter, and primates such as spider and woolly monkeys.
After an animal completes their rehabilitation process, they are released to where they belong, the wild. However, those with physical limitations or behavioral issues that prevent survival in the wild find a permanent, safe home at our center.

OUR PARTNERS

RAREC’s work has earned international recognition and support from leading conservation institutions, including the Nashville Zoo, Georgia Aquarium, Columbus Zoo, Busch Gardens Conservation Fund, and the National University of the Peruvian Amazon. Our conservation efforts have also been acknowledged by the Peruvian Government.

As a non-profit organization, we rely entirely on donations and the commitment of volunteers worldwide. Together, we can make a lasting impact in preserving the Amazon’s extraordinary biodiversity.
