Education Assistant

This opportunity is ideal for individuals passionate about community development and environmental education, offering hands-on experience in the field. As a coordinator, you will have the chance to teach children and young people in nearby small towns, guiding them in implementing initiatives that support environmental conservation and community development.
Utilizing your creativity, excellent communication skills, and compassion, your role involves supporting, coordinating, and facilitating educational programs. This includes visiting local schools to deliver lessons that inspire children to actively participate in protecting the natural world. You will also contribute to planning and conducting engaging workshops both within schools and for groups visiting the sanctuary.
Taking a leading role in planning and delivering meaningful sessions, you will educate young learners on the threats to animals and their habitats, recycling, and sustainable living. Additionally, you can participate in language exchange programs and mentor young individuals finishing school, collaborating directly with the directors of nearby schools to plan and execute English curricula that aid in children’s academic development.
These lessons will serve as a valuable asset for the growth and development of children, teenagers, and adults, setting them on a path to realizing their full potential.

Tasks:

1. Plan, prepare, and run environmental education programs.
2. Assist with English education programs, including curriculum development, lesson planning, and documenting success and progress.
3. Support and mentor young individuals finishing school.
4. Participate in community-based conservation efforts such as river beach clean-ups and reforestation programs.
5. Teach classes to small groups of children, adolescents, and adults, encouraging critical thinking and questions to deepen their knowledge.
6. Support the teaching curricular plan.
7. Prepare materials and conduct classes with volunteers and other interns under your supervision.
8. Collaborate with the director, administration, and other staff in planning and implementing special events.
9. Conduct evaluations and academic progress reports.
10. Monitor and evaluate the impact of the educational program.
11. Assist the Caretakers Team with basic animal care, cleaning, and general husbandry, some mornings each week (after coordinating the weekly activities).

12. Assist the Caretakers Team by giving lectures to conservation interns and volunteers about the Amazon and its wildlife.
13. Assist the Volunteer Coordinator with education materials for posts and social media updates.

Requirements:

• Minimum commitment of 6 months.
• Experience in teaching or working within an education setting.

• Strong communication skills and the ability to build connections with people.

Animal Caretaker

START DATE: ASAP

Full-time, Paid, Food and accommodations included.

Recruiting for 2 position. One long-term contract, one 3 month contract until July.

General tasks are: 

  • Teach, supervise and lead participants of the Long-Term Caretaker Internship in assigned tasks, they are part of the Caretakers team.
  • Teach, supervise and lead regular volunteers in assigned tasks (temporary help)
  • Teach, supervise and lead vet students when they are helping in husbandry (as part of the Vet Program)
  • Give lectures about conservations topics to interns and volunteers.
  • Coordinate the participants of the Long-Term Caretaker Internship to give conservation lectures.
  • Prepare and organize with the responsible for projects as camera traps, enrichment projects, introduction of a new member of a troop, etc.
  • Lead and organize to a responsible in the preparation of food and water for animals. 
  • Review of the effectiveness of the diets with the Veterinarians,
  • Keep and teach the caretakers team how to keep nursery and quarantine records. 
  • Coordinate and lead the daily cleaning of enclosures, animal sleeping areas, kitchen and storage areas. 
  • Monitoring the deep disinfection of dens and enclosures (pools, ropes, tires, hammocks), following the protocols, with biosecurity, when is necessary.
  • Observation and general management of wildlife animals’ health following standard operating procedures (Daily Sanctuary Rounds) informing the Head Vet.
  • Monitoring of enclosures, dens (internal structures, doors, slides, roofs, tabs) twice a day, in shift with professionals in charge of other areas.
  • Evaluate the separation or recycling of organic waste, plastics, cardboard, etc. at the quarantine area, animal’s kitchen, nursery area, etc.
  • Monitor the enrichment program on a weekly basis.
  • Monthly enrichment reports to the director/manager.
  • Responses to identified health problems may include dispensing medication.
  • Support during rescue events and similar activities if possible. Report abnormal conditions to the rest of the Team. 
  • Report maintenance needs to Administration
  • Plan and coordinate conservation projects with your team specially those aimed to prepare the releases.
  • Plan and coordinate environmental education with Volunteer Coordinator and your caretakers’ team
  • Plan animal releases in coordination with the director, veterinarians and biologists at the biological station.
  • In charge of the planning and performance of training animals for future release and operant conditioning for animals that are not possible to release.
  • Inventory and management of equipment and supplies
  • Management of caretaker staff (weekly meetings, coordinating day off and activities).
  • Monitoring biosecurity and health of care staff specially when they are in direct contact with primates and animals in quarantine and nursery.

Volunteer Coordinator

START DATE: 1st June

We are looking for an enthusiastic, sociable and responsible team player, for a 1-year commitment. Accomodation, food and work visa included. 

The ideal candidate is a go-getter and must love wildlife. They must be a people person as they will be the first person every new member meets upon arrival. 

General Tasks:

  • Contacting all new arrivals up to 3 weeks before arrival with all necessary information. 
  • Lead on training, updating and upholding the health and safety policies
  • Inducting and orientation of volunteers
  • Collect and drop off volunteers and interns from the Airport, take them shopping and ensure they have everything for a pleasant stay, including taking them to hospital, if required.
  • Keeping volunteers and interns schedules and projects organised on the daily board by coordinating with the vet and caretaker teams. 
  • Assist volunteers on a daily basis, knowing their background in order to propose alternative activities.
  • Answer any quiries, solve issues and support volunteers in any way necessary. 
  • Create content and schedule social media updates about volunteer activities, animal updates and marketing of programs and fundraising. 
  • Ordering and maintaining all necessary volunteer supplies in the kitchen and dining room, coordinating with the administration team,  
  • Daily feedback to the administration team about volunteer meals, rooms and facilities.
  • Promote volunteer social and recreational activities during their free time.
  • Recommend day trips and activities and acompany the volunteers on them, if needed.
